Yoroko*m*bu
For ten weeks, seaweed occupied my thoughts every day!
The project explores seaweed as both a catalyst for joy and a driver of life. Through research, historical and contemporary examples of seaweed's cultural significance across the world, Yoroko*m*bu is a handbook that invites readers to discover our relationship with seaweed and the ecosystems they sustain.
Special thank you to @seaweed.san on Instagram for providing me with her amazing seaweed recipes featured in this book! Printed on paper from Hiromi Paper (Culver City), and handmade papers produced with algae collected along the Los Angeles coastline. This book was designed, printed, bound, and assembled by hand. Created under the guidance of Rebeca Méndez for Ecological Arts and Justice (DESMA 146), this palm-sized book was developed as part of a cross-departmental Design + Writing senior symposium inspired by The Sea Around Us.
This project is a love letter to seaweed, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it!
Experiments
As part of my main project, I created a small booklet of pullout quotes used in Yoroko*m*bu on waxed seaweed paper. This small booklet was bound with dried, braided seagrass and features misprints, experiments, and extra copies.
